Member Information
The River Cities Concert Band is a non-audition band in the true spirit of the community band. Membership is available to all, taking into consideration section size, and all concerts are presented to our community free of charge. We hold 5 performances per year plus an occasional special added appearance. Chair placement in the band is based on need and the experience level of the perspective member. The band covers an extremely wide range of ages (16-95), professions, and playing ability. We do allow a few high school or college level musicians membership in the band to fill any need we may have and to allow an outreach experience for those really excited about concert band performance. We look to their school band directors for recommendation.
Our adult membership (those no longer in school) pay dues of $20 per year to help offset the cost of sheet music as the band plays some of the most current literature available. We play a wide variety of music styles from the traditional march, to jazz, to classical, to folk and more. Our music includes dance charts, vocals, solo instruments, and small combos from Broadway, movies, musicals and patriotic venues. We even dust off some of the best literature written directly for the concert band. We also choose special selections, not usually available for the concert band, scored for us by our in-house arranger which has included an original composition for Christmas! Anything goes as we believe that variety is truly the spice of life!
Our concert season is from Labor Day to Memorial Day with rehearsals held each Monday night from 7-9 p.m. at the Otsego Middle School Auditorium. We take time off for two weeks around Christmas and the week of Spring Break. Our audiences range from 400 to 600 per show held at either the Otsego or Plainwell High School Auditorium. Each season concludes with our concert in the park at the band shell in Plainwell for the Plainwell Music Society. Family and good fellowship is emphasized. We want everyone to feel good about their performances as one is never asked to do more than their personal best. It's all for one and one for all! Everyone in our band is an MVP!
